We receive many requests from patients for urgent, same day prescriptions if they have run out medication. Usually if patients take medication daily, it is expected that you will know how many tablets you have left each day and order your prescription with plenty of time to process your next request. However, we understand that mistakes can be made and this can lead to patients being left without enough medication to last them the normal amount of time.
If you need an urgent prescription, then the following procedure should be followed:
- Order your prescription in the usual manner (online, via the pharmacy etc)
- Contact us to advise why the prescription is needed urgently
- Your request will be passed to whichever Doctor is available to review
Prescriptions will not be done while patients wait, and in most cases will be asked to return to collect later in the day, or collect from their nominated pharmacy if they are signed up for EPS. This ensures that there are no interruptions for the Doctor during their clinic and helps to keep waiting times down for patients that have a pre-booked appointment. This will only be done in exceptional circumstances, and if patients repeatedly request urgent prescriptions, they will be asked to attend for a medication review with the Doctor or Pharmacist.
Items that are prescribed, but can be bought over the counter will not be processed urgently.
If you have any queries about this, you can contact reception who can explain the process further. Please note that reception staff are working to the guidelines and procedures put in place by the GP's, and any abuse towards our staff will not be tolerated.
